Quality Assurance and Compliance Manager

Qualifications or Requirements:

  • BS in Biology, Ecology, Chemistry or comparable field. Master’s degree desirable
  • 5-10 years of toxicology experience
  • String statistical/mathematical background

Expectations:
This position requires a dynamic, quick-thinking, curious, and flexible person. It is a
leadership role integrated with every member of the staff (personally and professionally).
The role also touches every piece of data generated at some point during the process of
compliance so requires a balance between interpretation and application of rules and
technical understanding and context. This position also requires clear, strong
communication skills to be successful. We work with living organisms that present a
variety of challenges to understanding and delivering strong biological data. As this
fundamentally differs from analytical chemistry data; specific experience with biological
and toxicological data is a necessity.

The Quality Assurance and Compliance Manager must be familiar with the types of data
generated and be able to:

  • Understand and interpret results in real-world and biologically significant terms;
  • Troubleshoot problems with testing processes, equipment, and facilities and determine whether problems are sporadic or systemic;
  • Identify and assess opportunities for process improvement and/or research;
  • Communicate clearly and obtain process buy-in with colleagues;
  • Be a self-starter and a leader

    This is a full-time, salaried position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week. Some overtime hours (evenings and weekends) are also expected as projects demand. Initial salary based on relevant experience.

    Position Responsibilities:

    1. Oversight and implementation of the Quality Assurance Program. Elements include:
    • Maintenance of laboratory accreditations with the States of California and Washington;
    • Conduct of facility and system audits (internal and external)
    • Conduct of procedural staff audits and training
    • Maintenance of Corrective Action Records
    • Maintenance of Management of Change system, which clearly and thoroughly documents all changes made to laboratory procedures, equipment, and personnel.
    • Review of test data at stages from initiation to completion.
    • Review of test reports
    • Review of laboratory log books for accuracy and completion.
    • Maintenance of datasheets and log books
    • Maintenance of laboratory-controlled documents including standard operating procedures, the Quality Assurance Manual, and laboratory Quick Reference Manual.
    • Maintenance of laboratory reference toxicant data and control charts.

      2. Oversight and implementation of the Health & Safety Program:

    • Maintenance of Health & Safety Program Manual
    • Review of site-specific Health & Safety Plans
    • Facilitate laboratory inspections by various agencies
    • Maintain facility permits for Hazardous Materials and Sample Disposal
    • Conduct facility inspections
    • Coordinate safety-related training for the staff and maintain training records
    • Coordinate physicals and exams for all field staff
    • Maintain all incident and near miss reports.
    • Investigate incidents and coordinate care through worker’s comp as necessary.
    • Work with laboratory safety officer to ensure compliance with program rules at the bench level

      3. Participation in mentoring and internship programs

    • Oversee projects conducted by interns (mentors are selected based on areas of interest and available projects).
    • Provide mentoring and professional development support to other staff.
    • Receive mentoring and professional development support.
